Reddit Upvotes Explained

Reddit upvotes are the votes that push content up and build your karma. When you upvote a post or comment, you help it rank higher and reward the person who made it; downvotes do the opposite. Upvotes shape how content is sorted and surfaced within Reddit and they feed your karma, but they are not a one-to-one count, and Reddit deliberately fuzzes them to stop manipulation.

Upvotes are the core currency of Reddit, so it pays to understand what they actually do, and what they do not. Here is how the system works.

What upvotes do

Upvotes have two jobs: they rank content, and they build karma. On ranking, votes directly influence what surfaces. Reddit's own documentation notes that the logged-out Popular feed is "determined by net upvotes," and votes also feed the personalized Home feed. On karma, Reddit is explicit: "your karma is a reflection of the upvotes and downvotes you receive on posts and comments you've made." So an upvote both lifts a piece of content and rewards its author's standing.

How upvotes turn into karma

You build karma by earning upvotes on genuine contributions. In Reddit's words, "you can earn karma by participating in communities that you have an interest in and making posts and comments people enjoy and upvote. The more upvotes you get, the more karma you'll receive." But do not expect the numbers to match exactly. Reddit states that "since it's just an approximate reflection, upvotes and karma don't have a 1:1 relationship."

Why you cannot reverse-engineer voting

Reddit intentionally obscures the exact mechanics. Its Reddiquette guidelines note that "some up/downvotes are by Reddit to fuzz the votes in order to confuse spammers and cheaters," and Reddit only ever publishes a high-level description of how content is sorted, never an exact formula. Any precise "vote ranking formula" you see quoted online is either outdated or unofficial, so treat vote counts as directional rather than exact.

The one hard rule: do not manipulate votes

Genuine votes are fine; manufactured ones get you banned. Reddit's Disrupting Communities policy is explicit: "Do not manipulate votes, evade enforcement, or otherwise disrupt Reddit communities," and it specifically names using multiple accounts, voting services, and automation. Enforcement climbs a ladder up to a permanent ban, which is why paying for upvotes is a losing trade. For the full breakdown, see our guide on whether buying Reddit upvotes is worth it.

Do Reddit upvotes affect Google rankings?

No. Upvotes drive visibility inside Reddit, but they are not a documented Google ranking factor. Google's public guide to its ranking systems makes no mention of votes, karma, or social signals, so chasing upvotes for SEO is chasing the wrong metric. The SEO value of Reddit comes from its content being indexed and cited, not from vote counts.

Why upvotes matter for marketers

For a brand, upvotes are a signal, not a goal. Genuine upvotes mean a community found your contribution valuable, which helps it surface and builds the account credibility you need to keep participating. You earn them the same way anyone does: by being useful. Building that genuine standing is the foundation of our Reddit account management work.

How genuine upvotes build standing: post genuine content, the community upvotes it, it ranks higher and earns karma, and you build the credibility to keep participating.
Genuine upvotes compound into account credibility.

Frequently asked questions

What do Reddit upvotes do?

They rank content and build karma. Upvotes help a post or comment surface higher within Reddit and add to the author's karma, while downvotes push content down. They are the main way Reddit's communities signal what is valuable.

Do upvotes equal karma?

Not exactly. Karma reflects the upvotes and downvotes on your posts and comments, but Reddit says it is only an approximate reflection with no one-to-one relationship. Separately, Reddit also fuzzes vote counts to deter manipulation, so the totals you see are not precise either.

Can you buy Reddit upvotes?

You should not. Using voting services or automation to inflate votes is manipulation under Reddit's rules and leads to bans. It also does not reliably work, since Reddit detects and strips inauthentic votes.

Do Reddit upvotes affect Google rankings?

No. Upvotes affect visibility within Reddit only. They are not a documented Google ranking factor, and Google's ranking-systems documentation does not mention votes or social signals.
